A practical guide to choosing a daily moisturizer
How to narrow the field using texture, ingredient lists, packaging and cost per use rather than marketing language.
Start with texture and routine
A moisturizer only works if you use it. Consider how it needs to sit under or over other products, how quickly you need it to absorb, and whether you prefer a lotion, cream or balm consistency.
Read the first five ingredients
Ingredients are broadly ordered by quantity, so the opening entries tell you most about what you are buying. Compare those between shortlisted options rather than comparing front-of-pack claims.
Packaging and shelf life
Pumps and tubes limit air and contact exposure compared with open jars. Check any period-after-opening symbol and whether the size matches how quickly you will realistically use it.
Cost per use, not headline price
Divide the price by the number of applications you expect. A larger container is not automatically better value if it expires first.
When to ask a professional
For eczema, acne, rosacea, allergies or any skin condition under treatment, ask a qualified healthcare professional what is suitable for you before changing products.
