Napping without disrupting nighttime sleep
Master strategic napping with timing and duration that support energy without disrupting your main sleep.

Benefits of short rest periods
A 20-30 minute nap can boost alertness and cognitive performance without leaving you groggy. Shorter naps allow you to rest without entering deep sleep stages that can interfere with nighttime sleep.
The optimal nap window is typically between 1-3 PM, when most people experience natural afternoon alertness dips. Napping later can reduce your sleep drive at bedtime.
Strategic timing and duration
Limit naps to 20-30 minutes to avoid sleep inertia (grogginess upon waking). Set an alarm so you do not oversleep. Avoid napping within 6 hours of your target bedtime.
Consistency helps too. If you nap at roughly the same time daily, your body adapts to expect it rather than seeing it as disruptive to your sleep schedule.
When napping may not help
If you have insomnia or difficulty falling asleep at night, daytime naps can worsen nighttime sleep. In these cases, consolidating all sleep into the main nighttime period may help.
If naps interfere with your nighttime sleep or daytime functioning despite careful timing, eliminating them may improve overall rest quality.
