Fitness fundamentals for men getting started
Start a sustainable fitness routine with realistic goals and evidence-based strategies.
Setting realistic fitness goals
Specific, measurable goals (run 5 miles, do 20 push-ups, lift 200 pounds) work better than vague ones (get fit, get healthy). Start with current ability and progress gradually.
Aim for 30-60 minutes of activity most days, mixing cardiovascular exercise and strength training. Progress that is slow and consistent beats ambitious plans you cannot maintain.
Starting with the basics
Walking, bodyweight exercises at home or bodyweight training at a gym require no equipment beyond what you have. These are sufficient to build fitness while you discover what you enjoy.
Do not buy expensive equipment or join an expensive gym immediately. Test whether you actually use fitness investments before spending big money.
Building consistency and staying with it
Schedule fitness like other important commitments. Exercise at the same time to build habit. Find activities you genuinely enjoy—you will only stick with fitness you actually like doing.
Expect soreness and difficulty initially. This is normal and temporary. After 2-3 weeks, most people feel noticeably better and more able.
